Day trips from Comala
Comala’s location just above Colima city makes it a good launch point for the surrounding highlands and the wider state. The best ones:
Suchitlan (about 15 minutes) — worth it
The next village up the hill, cooler and quieter, with more country food, mask-making traditions and clean volcano air. An easy, rewarding half-day that shows a calmer side of the region than the plaza crowds.
Colima city (about 15 minutes) — worth it
The state capital is right below you and worth a visit for its plazas, the regional museums and a proper meal at night. Easy to combine, since many people base there anyway.
Nevado de Colima and the volcano viewpoints (about 1 to 1.5 hours) — worth it if the sky is clear
The road toward the Nevado climbs into pine forest with dramatic looks at the active Volcan de Fuego. Great on a clear dry-season day, pointless when it’s cloudy or hazy. Drive it in daylight; the roads are winding.
Laguna La Maria and Carrizalillos lakes (about 45 minutes to 1 hour) — worth it for a slow day
Small highland lakes ringed by greenery, good for a relaxed lunch, a paddle or a walk. A gentle, low-key outing rather than a headline sight.
La Campana archaeological site (about 30 minutes, near Colima city) — worth it for history buffs
A modest pre-Hispanic ruin on the edge of Colima. Not a Teotihuacan, but a quiet, interesting stop if you like archaeology and are already down in the city.
For beaches, the Manzanillo coast is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away (approximate), better as its own overnight than a day trip.
