Day trips
Manzanillo, Colima
Trips worth making
Barra de Navidad and Melaque
About 45 minutes to an hour northwest, just over the Jalisco line. These twin beach towns are calmer, prettier, and more relaxed than Manzanillo itself, with a lagoon, a walkable malecón, and good seafood. For many people this is the better beach day, and it is easy to reach. Worth it.
Comala
Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours inland toward Colima city, a whitewashed pueblo mágico at the foot of the volcano, cooler than the coast, known for its arcaded plaza and the botanas tradition where free snacks arrive with your drinks. A genuine change of scene from the beach. Worth it if you want a break from the heat and have the time.
Laguna de Cuyutlán and the Tortugario
About 30 to 45 minutes southeast, a huge coastal lagoon with a turtle sanctuary and an ecopark near the salt-mining town of Cuyutlán. Low-key and local. Worth it if you have kids or an interest in the turtles, otherwise skippable.
Colima city and the volcanoes
Around 1.5 hours inland, the small state capital with a couple of good museums and views of the twin volcanoes. Pleasant but not essential, and better folded into a trip that also hits Comala.
For a two-day stay, Barra de Navidad is the one day trip most people will actually be glad they made.
