Where to stay

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

Where to base yourself

Where you sleep in Puerto Vallarta matters more than usual, because the city is spread along the bay and the good part is walkable only if you’re in it.

Zona Romantica (Old Town / Emiliano Zapata)

The default pick, and the one we’d choose. South of the river, walkable to Los Muertos beach, the malecon, the best restaurants and the nightlife. It’s also the heart of the gay scene and the most social part of town. Suits first-timers, couples, walkers and anyone who wants to leave the car behind. Book here and you barely need a taxi.

The malecon and Centro

Right on or just behind the seafront promenade. Central and lively, close to everything, but the ground-floor blocks can be loud at night. Good for a short stay where you want to step straight into the action.

Marina Vallarta

North, near the airport, built around a yacht harbor. Calmer, more polished, better for families or a quiet golf-and-boat trip. The trade-off is you’re a taxi ride from the old town’s character.

Hotel Zone

The wall of high-rise all-inclusives between Centro and the marina. Fine if you genuinely want to stay on the property and rarely leave, but you’ll be shuttling back and forth for the parts of Vallarta worth seeing. We’d skip it.

Conchas Chinas

Just south of the Zona Romantica, up the hill — quieter, greener, small coves, more villa rentals. Good for a calmer base that’s still a short ride from the action.
