Is it safe?

Tequila, Jalisco

Is Tequila safe to visit?

Short answer: yes, for a normal visit. Tequila is a heavily touristed Pueblo Magico with a visible presence of visitors, tour groups and town police around the center. The everyday risks here are ordinary, not dramatic - this is not a place you need to feel tense walking around.

Day and night

The center - the plaza, the church, the main distillery streets - is comfortable to walk by day and into the evening. When the town is busy this is the safest place to be. After dark, stick to the lit central blocks where restaurants and bars are open; the plaza stays lively until late on weekends.

What the real risks are

  • Petty theft and pickpockets in crowded moments - the packed plaza, tour-bus scrums, tasting rooms. Keep your phone and wallet secured.
  • Over-serving. The whole point of town is tequila tasting. The genuine risk here is your own tab. Pace yourself, keep an eye on your drink, and do not wander unfamiliar dark streets buzzed.
  • Road conditions if you drive out to the fields - narrow country roads, agave trucks, and the mountain highway back to Guadalajara. Avoid driving it at night.

What a local would tell you

Skip the empty, unlit residential streets on the edges of town at night - not because they are dangerous, but because there is nothing out there and you are just a tired tourist walking alone. Stay central, drink at a pace you can walk home from, and you will be fine.
