Trips worth making
The lake villages (Tzintzuntzan, Santa Fe de la Laguna, Ihuatzio)
About 20 to 40 minutes around the lake by car or colectivo. Tzintzuntzan was the old Purepecha capital and has the Yacatas pyramids and a former convent, plus a strong pottery and craft market. Ihuatzio has quieter ruins. This ring of villages is the best half-day out and shows you the living craft culture. Worth it.
Janitzio island
A short boat ride from the Patzcuaro pier, roughly 20 to 30 minutes each way. Culturally the famous outing, especially at Day of the Dead, but the lake is degraded, the island is steep and crowded with stalls, and the fishermen photo act is staged. Worth it once for the view and the atmosphere; go in with realistic expectations.
Santa Clara del Cobre
About 20 to 30 minutes south. The copper town, where you can watch smiths hammer copper by hand and buy directly. A rewarding, low-key half-day if you like crafts. Worth it.
Morelia
About 1 hour by bus or car. The state capital, with a magnificent cathedral, a colonial center and much bigger dining and nightlife. Easy as a full day out, or a natural entry or exit point for the whole trip. Worth it if you have the time.
Tzararacua and the wider sierra
Further afield toward Uruapan (roughly 1 to 1.5 hours) lie waterfalls and avocado country. Only worth it if you are staying longer and want more nature; skip on a two-day visit.
