Getting there & around
Cuernavaca, Morelos
Getting there
From Mexico City is the whole story — most people arrive from CDMX, and Mexico City (MEX) is the nearest airport.
- By bus. The easiest option. Frequent, comfortable coaches (Pullman de Morelos is the classic line) run from Mexico City to Cuernavaca all day. Figure roughly 1.5 hours when traffic behaves, more on Friday and Sunday. There are direct services from the CDMX airport itself, which is the smart move if you are flying in.
- By car. The Mexico City–Cuernavaca highway is quick outside peak hours — around 1 to 1.5 hours from the south of the city. Weekends are the catch: chilango traffic can turn it into a slow crawl in both directions. It is a toll road; bring some cash or a tag.
Getting around
The historic center is compact and best done on foot — the cathedral, Jardín Borda and plazas are all within an easy walk of each other.
Beyond the center, Cuernavaca is a hilly, spread-out, car-first city, and that is where it gets tiring:
- Taxis and apps. Ride-hailing works here and is the sanest way to cross town or get back after dark. Use it rather than walking long distances at night.
- Local buses and combis. Cheap and everywhere, but crowded, confusing to outsiders, and not worth the hassle for a short visit.
- Driving. Fine if you are heading to a balneario or on to Tepoztlán, but traffic in the center is heavy and parking is a chore. For the center itself, park once and walk.
Honest note: the sprawl and traffic are a real part of why Cuernavaca underwhelms. Keep your visit centered and you skip most of it.
