Day trips
San Pancho (San Francisco), Nayarit
Day trips worth making
San Pancho is small and quiet, which makes it a good base for dipping into busier places and returning to calm. Travel times below are approximate.
Sayulita — about 10 minutes
The obvious one. Sayulita is the louder, busier sibling: more shops, more bars, beginner-friendly surf and a party energy San Pancho doesn’t have. Worth it for a half-day of browsing, a surf lesson or a night out, and honestly better as a visit than a base if you like quiet. Easy cab ride each way.
Lo de Marcos — about 15 to 20 minutes north
A smaller, even sleepier town with a calmer, more swimmable beach than San Pancho’s shorebreak. Worth it precisely if you want a mellow beach day and a lunch of fresh fish. Low-key by design.
Punta Mita — about 40 to 50 minutes south
The upscale end of the peninsula, with calmer water, snorkeling and boat trips out to the Marietas Islands. Worth it if you want a snorkel or a boat day; skip it if you are after budget and grit, because it is the polished, pricier side of Nayarit.
Puerto Vallarta — about 1 to 1.5 hours south
The big city: malecón, old town, restaurants and an airport. Worth a day if you want urban energy, art and shopping, but it is a full day out and the drive can drag through Bucerías traffic.
Honest ranking: Sayulita for the easy contrast, Lo de Marcos for a swimmable beach, Punta Mita for water activities, Vallarta only if you want a city fix.
