Day trips worth making
Sayulita sits in a stretch of coast with better options a short hop away, which is a big part of its appeal.
San Pancho (San Francisco) — about 10 minutes — worth it
The quieter neighbor just north. Same beautiful coast, a fraction of the crowds, a more grown-up pace, and good food of its own. The easiest and most rewarding trip from Sayulita — go for an afternoon or a swim day when the main town feels too busy.
Punta Mita and the south beaches — about 30 to 40 minutes — worth it
The peninsula south toward Punta Mita has calmer coves and clearer water. Nice for a swim, snorkel or a slower beach day. Some of it skews upscale and resort-owned, so pick a public beach and go early.
Marietas Islands boat trip — a half to full day — mixed
A protected island group off the coast with dramatic rock formations and the famous restricted “hidden beach.” Access is capped by permits that sell out, and the day is long and not cheap. Genuinely impressive if you book a reputable operator and set expectations; a letdown if you expect solitude or turn up hoping to walk onto the hidden beach.
Puerto Vallarta — about 45 to 60 minutes — worth it if you want a city day
The malecón, bigger restaurant scene, art and shopping. Easy to reach by bus. A good change of pace if two days of small-town beach is enough for you.
Honest note: the closer, quieter trips (San Pancho, the nearby beaches) give you more than the big organized boat day for less money and hassle.
