Day trips

Bernal, Queretaro

Trips worth making from Bernal

Bernal itself is a half-day, so the smart play is to pair it with what sits nearby. Most of these work best with a car.

  • Queretaro wine and cheese route (about 15 to 40 minutes). Worth it, and the natural companion to Bernal. Vineyards and cheese farms cluster between Ezequiel Montes and Tequisquiapan, offering tastings and long lunches. This is what turns a quick rock visit into a full, satisfying day.
  • Tequisquiapan (about 30 to 40 minutes). Worth it. A larger, easygoing Pueblo Magico with a pretty square, wine-and-cheese festivals in season, and more restaurants than Bernal. Good for a slower afternoon.
  • Queretaro city (about 1 hour). Very worth it if you have not seen it. A genuinely handsome colonial center with aqueduct, plazas and one of the best food and cafe scenes in the Bajio. Many people base here and visit Bernal, rather than the reverse.
  • San Joaquin and the Sierra Gorda foothills (roughly 1.5 to 2 hours). For a longer, wilder day. Mountain roads, cooler air, caves and archaeology. Worth it only if you want mountains and have the time; it is a real drive.

Honest note: you do not need to leave the region to fill your time. Bernal plus the wine route plus a night in Queretaro city is the classic, low-stress loop and it is the one we would pick.
