Getting there & around

Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Getting to Bacalar

Bacalar sits deep in the south of Quintana Roo, and getting there is the trade-off for the quiet. Plan the journey honestly.

By bus (the common way)

ADO runs comfortable long-distance buses to Bacalar from Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. From Cancún it’s roughly a 5 to 6 hour ride; from Tulum, around 3 to 4. The buses are air-conditioned and fine for the distance, but it’s a long sit. The town also connects easily to Chetumal, about 40 minutes south.

By air

The nearest airport is Chetumal (CTM), about an hour’s drive south, with domestic connections. Many travelers still fly into Cancún and go overland because there’s far more flight choice. The new Tulum airport has shortened the drive from the north for some routes — check current schedules.

By car

Driving is the most flexible option. The highway south is mostly straight and in decent shape, but watch for topes (speed bumps) entering towns, occasional potholes and slow trucks. Don’t drive the highway after dark if you can avoid it — unlit shoulders and animals are the real hazard.

Getting around town

Bacalar is walkable at its core, but hilly down to the water and spread out along the shore. Options:

  • On foot. Fine for the plaza, fort and central restaurants.
  • Taxi. Cheap and plentiful for the trip down to lagoon hotels or the balneario, especially at night. Agree the fare first.
  • Bike or golf cart. Popular for the waterfront, but mind the traffic and heat.

Honest note

There’s no need for a car once you’re settled in town. Rent one only if you plan day trips out.
