Where to stay
Holbox, Quintana Roo
Where to base yourself
Holbox is small enough that no area is truly far from another, but where you sleep still shapes your days.
The town center and plaza
The grid around the main plaza and ferry dock is the practical choice for most people, especially first-timers and anyone without a bike habit. You’re walking distance to restaurants, dive shops, mini-markets and the ferry. It’s the liveliest part of the island in the evening — which means a bit of noise, but also the easiest logistics. Best value, too.
The north beachfront
Hotels strung along the north-side beach put you steps from the sand and the sunset. This suits couples and anyone prioritizing quiet and a room-to-water walk over nightlife. Prices climb the closer you are to the water and the more “boutique” the property. You’ll want a bike or cart rides to reach the town for dinner.
Toward Punta Cocos and the west end
Further out toward Punta Cocos it gets genuinely calm and spread-out — good for honeymooners and people who want to disappear. The trade-off is distance: you’re committing to biking or golf-cart taxis for every meal and errand.
Budget note
Backpackers and budget travelers do best in the town center, where hostels and simpler guesthouses cluster. Book ahead in whale-shark season (June to September) — the good-value rooms go first, and walk-up availability is thin.
