Is it safe?
Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo
Short answer: Isla Mujeres is one of the more relaxed places in Quintana Roo, and the town is comfortable to walk day and night. Violent crime is not the traveler’s concern here. Your real risks are the road and the water.
Walking around
The town and Playa Norte are fine on foot at any hour. Streets stay busy with tourists and locals into the evening, and the north end is well lit. Nothing here needs a hard no, but past midnight the quieter back streets away from the main strip get dark and empty, so keep to the lively blocks and take a taxi if you are heading somewhere remote.
The actual risks
- Golf carts. The most common way visitors get hurt. People rent a cart with no experience, drive it like a beach toy, and tip it on the coast road or clip a scooter. Go slow, watch the sand-covered curves near Punta Sur, and do not drive one after drinking.
- The ocean at Punta Sur and the east side. Playa Norte is calm and safe, but the southern and eastern shores have rocks, currents and no lifeguards. Swim on the north beach; treat the rest as scenery.
- Petty theft. Standard beach-town stuff. Do not leave phones and bags unattended on the sand while you swim, and lock valuables in your room.
A friend’s advice
Watch what you drink and where. Some bars overpour cheap liquor; stick to busier, well-reviewed spots and pace yourself, especially before getting back on a cart.
