Where to stay

San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi

Base yourself in the historic center

For a one or two-night stay, there’s really one answer: the colonial center. Everything worth seeing sits within a walkable grid of plazas, and staying inside it means you can drop your bag, walk out, and be eating in a square within minutes. It also solves the safety question, since this is the part of town that stays lively after dark.

The main options

  • Around Plaza de Armas and the cathedral — The heart of it, steps from the government palace, cathedral and the main pedestrian streets. Best for first-timers who want to walk everywhere and don’t mind some evening noise from the plaza.
  • Near Plaza del Carmen and the Alameda — A slightly calmer pocket a few blocks east, close to the Templo del Carmen and the leafy Alameda park. Good for anyone who wants the center’s convenience with quieter nights.
  • Restored colonial hotels — The center has a handful of converted mansions with courtyards and thick stone walls. These are the standout stays and reasonable value compared with pricier tourist cities nearby.

Who each suits

First-timers and short-stay travelers should stay as close to Plaza de Armas as their budget allows. Budget travelers will find guesthouses and simple hotels a few blocks out, still walkable by day. There isn’t a real nightlife district to chase here, so pick for walkability and quiet rather than a scene. Avoid basing yourself out by the bus station to save money; the small saving isn’t worth losing the walkable evenings that make this city work.
