Where locals go
El Fuerte, Sinaloa
Off the plaza
The square is where visitors sit, and it is pleasant, but residents spread out from there. The small municipal market and the taco and torta stands a few streets back are where people actually eat on an ordinary day, cheaper and less polished than the plaza restaurants and often better for it. Follow the locals to whichever stand has a line.
The river as an everyday place
For people who live here the river is not just the tourist boat. On a day off, families go down to the water and the reservoir nearby to fish, picnic and cool off, especially on warm weekends. It is the town’s default outdoor plan, and tagging along or just walking down at the end of the day shows you the place without any tour.
A friend’s tip
Mornings are the local rhythm. Get a coffee and pan dulce early, watch the town open up around the plaza before the day heats up, and you will see El Fuerte as residents do rather than as a train stop. The evenings belong to visitors and the birding boats; the mornings are the town’s own.
