Getting there & around
Coatepec, Veracruz
Coatepec sits in the highlands just below Xalapa, and almost everyone arrives through Xalapa.
Getting there
- By air. The nearest airport is Xalapa (JAL), a small airport with limited connections, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Coatepec by car. Many travelers instead fly into Veracruz city (VER) on the coast, which has more flights, then drive up — that’s a longer haul, roughly 2 hours, and the road climbs steadily into the hills.
- By bus. Xalapa is the regional hub with frequent first-class buses from Mexico City (roughly 5 hours), Puebla and Veracruz city. From Xalapa, local buses and colectivos run to Coatepec constantly and take about 20 to 30 minutes. All times approximate.
- By car. Driving is the easy option and gives you the day trips. The Xalapa–Coatepec road is short but can be foggy and busy; take it slow, especially at night.
Getting around
Once you’re in town, you won’t need a car. The center is flat, compact and walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Taxis are cheap and easy for anything farther out, and colectivos handle the Xalapa and Xico runs.
For coffee farms and waterfalls in the surrounding hills, you’ll want either your own car or an arranged tour — public transport thins out fast once you leave the towns. Honest note: the cobbled, hilly streets are charming but hard on wheels and ankles, so pack real shoes and expect the rain to make stone slick.
