Getting there & around

El Tajin, Veracruz

Getting to El Tajin

El Tajin sits about 15 minutes by road from Papantla and roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Poza Rica, the bigger city with more services. Most travelers use one of those two towns as a base rather than sleeping at the ruins.

By air. The nearest airport is El Tajin/Poza Rica (PAZ), with limited domestic connections, mostly to Mexico City. Flights are infrequent, so check schedules early. Many people instead fly into Mexico City or Veracruz and drive.

By bus. First-class buses (ADO and similar) run to Papantla and Poza Rica from Mexico City, Veracruz and Xalapa. From Mexico City reckon on roughly 5 to 6 hours; from the city of Veracruz around 4 to 5. These coaches are comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable. Times are approximate and worth confirming.

By car. Driving gives you the most freedom for the day trip. From Mexico City it is about 4 to 5 hours via Pachuca or the Tuxpan route. The highways are decent; the last stretches are two-lane and slower, so avoid driving them after dark.

Getting around once there

From Papantla or Poza Rica, the simplest option is a taxi or rideshare straight to the site entrance, a short and cheap hop. Colectivos and local buses marked for El Tajin also run from Papantla for a few pesos, though they are slower and less frequent. Once inside, everything is on foot over flat but sometimes uneven, muddy ground, so wear real shoes.
