Where locals go

Veracruz, Veracruz

Where locals actually go

Jarochos, as Veracruz locals are called, spend their real time a little away from the postcard malecon.

The everyday spots

Weekend mornings mean a strong cafe con leche and a pan at one of the old portales cafes on the Zocalo, the same ones tourists use but earlier and slower. For seafood, locals head to the stalls and comedores inside and around the Mercado de Pescados (fish market) rather than the waterfront tourist restaurants, where the same fish costs more. Cafe con leche done “lechero” style, poured tableside from a height, is a genuine local ritual worth copying.

Day off

On a hot afternoon families drift south toward the calmer beaches around Boca del Rio and Anton Lizardo for a proper swim, since the city water isn’t it. Evenings, the danzon in the plaza is not just a tourist show, plenty of older locals turn up to dance seriously. Younger crowds head to the bars and clubs along the Boca del Rio side for the late nights.

A friend’s tip

Ask for a cold caldo or a plate of arroz a la tumbada where you see families eating, not where you see cameras. And say yes to a lechero.
