Getting there & around
Homún, Yucatán
Getting to Homún
Homún sits roughly an hour southeast of Mérida, and Mérida’s airport (MID) is the natural starting point. Most people come as a day trip from the city.
By car is the easiest. It is about 60 to 70 km from central Mérida, roughly an hour on straightforward two-lane roads through Acanceh and Cuzamá. A rental car gives you the freedom to reach the cenotes on your own schedule and to stop at other towns on the way back.
By colectivo or bus works if you do not want to drive. Shared vans and second-class buses run from Mérida toward the Homún area for a small fare, but they are slower, less frequent, and drop you in town rather than at any cenote. Budget extra time and expect a warm, no-frills ride.
By tour is the low-effort option. Plenty of Mérida operators bundle Homún cenotes into a half or full day with transport and a guide included. You pay more and move on someone else’s clock, but you skip all the logistics.
Getting around once there
This is the part to understand: you do not walk between cenotes. They are spread across dirt roads outside the town, sometimes a few kilometers apart. The local system is the moto-taxi — a motorbike with a covered passenger seat. Drivers wait around the plaza, and you hire one for the afternoon. He drives you cenote to cenote and effectively becomes your guide.
Agree on a price and a rough list of cenotes before you set off. It is cash only, small bills, and a tip at the end is normal and appreciated.
