Getting there & around

Getting there

By air. The nearest airport is Manzanillo (ZLO), the Playa de Oro International Airport, roughly a 45-minute to one-hour drive south in Colima state. It runs a modest schedule of domestic flights (Guadalajara, Mexico City) plus seasonal winter charters and some flights from Canada and the US, which is exactly the crowd that winters here. From the airport, a prearranged shuttle or a taxi is the simplest way in; agree the fare or book ahead. Puerto Vallarta (PVR) is the far bigger hub with many more international flights, but it sits about three to four hours up the coast, so only fly into Puerto Vallarta if the flights or price are dramatically better and you do not mind the transfer.

By bus. Long-distance buses connect Guadalajara to the Barra–Melaque area in roughly five to six hours. Primera Plus is the main line on this route, with ETN running some coach services too; both are comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable. Coastal buses also run down from Puerto Vallarta in around four to five hours. Most services arrive at the terminal in Melaque, from which Barra is a very short taxi or local bus hop of ten minutes or so. (Durations and fares are approximate; check current schedules and expect the Guadalajara run to cost roughly 500 to 800 MXN one way.)

By car. Driving from Guadalajara takes around four to five hours. Part of the route winds through mountains and coastal curves, so leave early and arrive in daylight. The coast highway (Highway 200) up from Puerto Vallarta is scenic but slow, curvy and dotted with topes and small towns. If you are prone to motion sickness, the mountain and coast sections will test you, sit up front, and do not read in the car.

Getting around

Once you are here you barely need wheels. Barra town is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, and the malecón, the beach, the seafood restaurants and the lagoon boat dock are all central.

  • Lanchas (small boats). These are the “taxis” of the lagoon, crossing to Colimilla and the marina point. Agree the fare out loud before you step in, and confirm whether it is per person or per boat.
  • Local buses and colectivos. Cheap, frequent minibuses link Barra and Melaque throughout the day for a handful of pesos. Flag them on the main road; they are the local way to shuttle between the two towns.
  • Taxis. Plentiful and inexpensive for short hops. There is no reliable rideshare app coverage here, so use street taxis and agree the price first, since meters are rare.
  • A car is only worth having if you plan to explore the Costalegre beaches up the coast (see day trips). In town it is more nuisance than help; parking is tight and everything is a walk.

A friend’s tip: if you are arriving by bus with luggage, just take the short taxi from the Melaque terminal into Barra rather than wrestling bags onto a colectivo. It costs little and saves the hassle.
