Where to stay
Barra de Navidad, Jalisco
Where to base yourself
Barra is small enough that no choice is wrong, but the vibe shifts a little block to block.
Barra town center
The sand spit itself, near the malecón and the lagoon. This is where you want to be for the classic Barra day: seafood restaurants, the boat dock for Colimilla, and both the beach and the calm lagoon within a couple of minutes’ walk. Best for first-timers and anyone who wants to leave the car parked and do everything on foot. Lodging is mostly small hotels and guesthouses rather than big resorts.
The lagoon side and marina
A quieter stretch looking over the water toward the mangroves, including the big marina and its hotel across the lagoon. Suits people who want calm, sunset views and a bit more polish, and do not mind a short walk or a lancha ride into the action.
Melaque
The larger town a short hop around the bay. More long-stay snowbirds, cheaper monthly rentals, a bigger beach and more everyday services. Good for budget travelers, families and anyone settling in for weeks rather than days. Trade-off is it feels more like a workaday town and less like the postcard.
For a three-day trip, stay in Barra town center. For a month on the coast, price out Melaque.
