The Zapotecs flattened a mountaintop to build their capital, and the setting is still the point: a grand plaza floating 400 meters above the valley floor, with the whole of central Oaxaca spread below. You don’t need a guide to feel it, though the carved “Danzantes” stones reward one.
What a friend would tell you: this is a morning, not a day. Arrive at opening, walk it in two hours, and be back in the city for lunch. Skip the on-site restaurant.
