Puerto Escondido
Real surf town with a working port — not a resort in disguise
“The rare beach town that's still a town — world-class surf, working fishing port, real prices.”
Puerto is several beaches wearing one name. Zicatela is the famous one — the “Mexican Pipeline,” genuinely expert-only when the swell runs. La Punta at its south end is the mellow longboard scene. Carrizalillo, a cove down a long staircase, is where you swim and where beginners take lessons (a 90-minute group lesson runs about 600 MXN, June 2026).
What a friend would tell you: the ocean here demands respect before affection. Swim where the locals swim, ask before paddling out, and treat red flags as law, not suggestion. Do that and Puerto is the best beach base on the Pacific coast.
When to go

May–October is rainy season and big-swell season on Zicatela. September is the wettest month and the quietest.
