Trips worth making from Puebla

The countryside around Puebla is one of its best assets, and a couple of these are genuinely worth a half or full day.

Cholula — 15 to 20 minutes

The easy winner. Home to the Great Pyramid (the largest by volume in the world, mostly buried under a hill topped by a church) and a laid-back town of rooftop bars with clear Popocatépetl views on a good morning. Half a day, more if you linger. Worth it.

Atlixco — about 45 minutes

A flower-growing town with a bright, walkable centre and a hilltop viewpoint over the valley. Calmer and more colorful than Puebla itself, good for a slow lunch. Worth it if you want a gentler pace; skip if you’re tight on time.

Cantona ruins — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours

A vast, little-visited pre-Hispanic city with long stone causeways and ball courts, and almost no crowds. Genuinely rewarding for ruin enthusiasts, but it’s a long drive and there’s little else out there — go only if archaeology is your thing.

Cuetzalan — about 3 hours

A misty highland Pueblo Mágico with a Sunday market and waterfalls. Beautiful, but the distance makes it an overnight rather than a day trip. Save it for a longer stay.

Honest take

If you only do one, make it Cholula — it’s close, cheap by Uber, and pairs a pyramid with the best volcano views near the city. The rest depend on how much time and driving appetite you have.
