Where to stay

Puebla, Puebla

Where to base yourself

For a two-day visit, stay in or one step from the Centro Histórico. Everything worth walking to is inside or beside it, and you won’t want to be commuting in city traffic.

Centro Histórico

The core grid around the zócalo and cathedral. Best for first-timers and anyone here to eat and wander — you step out the door onto tiled streets and can walk to markets, churches and restaurants. Expect converted colonial buildings, some with courtyards, ranging from simple guesthouses to a few grand hotels. Trade-off: a few blocks can be noisy at night, so ask for an interior room if you’re a light sleeper.

Around Los Sapos and the Barrio del Artista

Just southeast of the zócalo, this pocket of antique shops, galleries and cafés is quieter and full of character, still an easy walk to everything. Good for repeat visitors and couples who want atmosphere over convenience.

Cholula (nearby alternative)

Fifteen to twenty minutes out, Cholula is younger, greener and more laid-back, with the pyramid and volcano views. Suits travelers who want a calmer base and nightlife around a university crowd, and don’t mind a short cab ride into Puebla proper. Not ideal if your priority is the historic centre.

Skip

The zones out by the bus station and the big-box commercial belts. They’re cheaper and have chain hotels, but you’ll spend your visit fighting traffic to reach anything worth seeing.
