Getting to Comalcalco
Comalcalco is a day trip from Villahermosa, which is where you’ll fly in — Villahermosa airport (VSA) has regular connections to Mexico City and other hubs. The ruins sit about 55 km northwest of the city, roughly an hour by road in normal traffic.
By car is the easiest way. Rent in Villahermosa or drive your own; the highway northwest toward Comalcalco town is straightforward and well signed, and the site is a few kilometres past the town. Parking at the entrance is simple. Driving also lets you tack on a cacao hacienda without waiting on anyone’s schedule.
By bus and colectivo, take an ADO or second-class bus from Villahermosa to Comalcalco town (roughly an hour, approximate), then a short taxi or colectivo the last few kilometres to the archaeological zone. It works, but the last leg is fiddly and you’ll spend real time waiting — a car or an organized tour is far less hassle.
Organized tours from Villahermosa usually bundle the ruins with a cacao hacienda and handle all the transport. For a single day with no car, this is often the least painful option.
Getting around
Once you’re at the site, everything is on foot. The archaeological zone is compact and flat, though paths between the mounds are unshaded and can be muddy after rain. Wear real shoes, not sandals, and bring water — there’s little to buy inside.
