Comalcalco, Tabasco

Hours and fees

The archaeological zone keeps standard INAH hours, roughly 9am to 5pm, with last entry an hour or so before closing (approximate — the site verifies exact figures). Entry is a modest fee in the range of a few dollars, typical of INAH sites, and there’s usually a small extra charge if you bring a video camera or drive in. The on-site museum is included or near-free. Bring cash in pesos; card payment isn’t reliable here.

How long to allow

Plan two to three hours for the ruins and museum together. The site is compact and flat, so you’re not covering big distances — most of your time goes to the main acropolis and the cluster of brick mounds. If you add a cacao hacienda, budget another hour or two.

What to bring

  • Water, and more than you think — there’s little shade and Tabasco is hot and humid.
  • A hat and sunscreen; the mounds are open to the sun.
  • Real walking shoes, not sandals — paths turn muddy after rain.
  • Cash in pesos for entry, parking and any snacks.
  • Bug spray, especially in the wetter months.

Best time of day

Go early, right at opening. The morning is cooler, the light on the red brick is better, and you’ll beat both the heat and any tour groups that roll in mid-morning. Avoid the mid-afternoon, when the sun is at its most punishing and there’s nowhere to escape it. In the March-to-May dry window you’ll also dodge the flooding that hits the region in the autumn rains.
