Getting to Tlacotalpan

Tlacotalpan sits about an hour and a half southeast of the city of Veracruz, and Veracruz is how almost everyone arrives.

By air

The nearest airport is Veracruz (VER), with flights from Mexico City and a few other hubs. From the airport you still need to cover the ground to Tlacotalpan by car or bus, so plan on the drive below.

By bus

Buses run from Veracruz toward Tlacotalpan and the wider Papaloapan basin. The ride is roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on the service and stops (approximate). Second-class services stop more often and are slower; a direct or first-class leg is more comfortable. You will typically be dropped near the edge of town, from where the center is a short walk or a quick taxi.

By car

Driving is the easiest option and gives you flexibility. From Veracruz it is roughly 90 minutes to two hours on the highway heading south, an easy and mostly flat route. Do the drive in daylight, as with any Mexican highway leg, and you have nothing to think about. There is space to park near the center.

Getting around once you are there

You do not need any transport in Tlacotalpan. The town is tiny, flat, and built on a walkable grid; you can cross the whole center on foot in about fifteen minutes. The only “ride” worth taking is a boat launch on the Papaloapan river. Streets are quiet, so walking is genuinely the most pleasant way to see everything.
