Uxmal
Puuc-style Maya city south of Mérida, a fraction of Chichén's crowds.
“Arguably more rewarding than Chichén Itzá — intricate stonework, you can still climb some structures, and far fewer people. The clear pick for ruins lovers.”
Uxmal is a Maya archaeological site about an hour and a half south of Mérida, in the low Puuc hills. It is one of the finest examples of Puuc-style architecture anywhere: dense geometric stone mosaics, long low palace facades, and the rounded Pyramid of the Magician that greets you at the entrance. If you have already braved the crowds and rope lines at Chichén Itzá, Uxmal is the quieter, and to a lot of people the better, experience.
Is it worth it
Yes, and this is not a close call for anyone who actually likes ruins. The stonework here is more intricate than at Chichén, you still get room to breathe rather than dodging tour groups, and you can climb some of the structures, including the Great Pyramid, for views over the jungle canopy. What you lose is the single iconic silhouette everyone recognizes; what you gain is scale, detail and space to wander. For ruins lovers this is the clear pick in Yucatán.
Laying it out
The site is compact and walkable on one loop: the Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery Quadrangle, the ball court, then up the hill to the Governor’s Palace and the Great Pyramid. Most people see it well in two to three hours, so a single day trip from Mérida covers it comfortably. There is very little shade and the Yucatán sun is punishing, so the timing matters more than the itinerary.
Best season
Aim for the cooler, drier stretch of November through March. Avoid the peak-heat months of May and September if you can. Whatever the month, go early, right at opening, before the heat builds and the mid-morning coaches arrive.
How we’d play it
Drive or bus down from Mérida, be at the gate when it opens, do the whole loop before 11am, and carry more water than you think you need. If you have a car, pair it with the smaller Puuc-route sites nearby. Save the seasonal evening sound-and-light show only if you are staying over.
When to go
bestthink twice
Best in cooler, drier Nov-Mar. Little shade on site, so go early; an evening sound-and-light show runs seasonally.
