Things to do
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Worth your time
Walk the center, slowly. The single best thing to do in San Miguel is wander. The Parroquia, El Jardín, the side streets full of doorways, courtyards and galleries. Go early before the day-trippers and again at golden hour. This is free and it is the whole point of the town.
Rooftop at sunset. Several bars and restaurants overlook the Parroquia. Time a drink for when the church lights come on. Yes it is a cliché, and yes it is genuinely the money shot.
Fabrica La Aurora. A former textile mill turned into a large complex of art galleries, design shops and cafés. Easy to spend a couple of hours, no ticket needed to browse.
Mercado de Artesanías and the local markets. The craft market is touristy but decent for textiles, tin and pottery. Mercado Ignacio Ramírez next door is the everyday food market and more fun.
El Charco del Ingenio. A botanical garden and reserve on the edge of town, good for a morning walk with big views over the valley.
Worth it if it is your thing
- Hot springs day. Several thermal-spring spots sit outside town (see day trips). Relaxing, but a half-day commitment.
- Cooking classes, mezcal tastings, gallery-and-studio tours. Plenty on offer, well run, priced in dollars. Good if you like guided experiences, skippable if you would rather roam.
Oversold
- The generic bus tours and “trolley” loops. The town is small enough to walk; a tour mostly saves you nothing.
- Pricey boutique shopping billed as artisan. Some is the real thing, much is marked-up décor. Buy what you like, but do not assume the label.
Two or three unhurried days covers the essentials without padding.
