Where to stay
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato
Where to base yourself
San Miguel is small, so the choice is really about how central and how quiet you want to be, and how much you want to pay.
Centro
The historic center, within a few blocks of El Jardín, is where most people should stay. You walk to everything: church, markets, restaurants, rooftops. It is also the priciest, the most touristed and the loudest around the plaza, especially on weekends and during festivals. Good for first-timers and anyone on a short trip who wants zero logistics.
Just off Centro
Neighborhoods like San Antonio and the streets climbing away from the plaza get you calmer nights and better value while still being a 10 to 20 minute walk in. San Antonio has a more residential, artsy feel with plenty of cafés. This is the sweet spot for a second visit or a longer stay.
Guadiana and the outer colonias
Quieter, greener, more spread out, often with pools and views. Suits people with a car, families, or anyone who wants a wellness-and-retreat pace over walkability. You will rely on short taxi rides to reach the center.
Honest notes
- Budget is relative here. Even hostels and modest guesthouses run higher than comparable Mexican towns, and much is priced with dollars in mind.
- There is no real nightlife district; evenings are rooftops, restaurants and bars, all near the center.
- For Day of the Dead or December, book months ahead or accept slim, expensive pickings.
