Is it safe?

Cozumel, Quintana Roo

The honest answer

Cozumel is one of the calmer places you can visit in Mexico. It’s an island with a tourism-dependent economy and a visible police presence around San Miguel, and violent crime rarely touches visitors. You can walk the town waterfront and central streets day and night without much thought.

Day and night

San Miguel’s malecon, the central plaza and the surrounding grid are fine to stroll after dark — bars and families keep them busy. Away from the lit center, streets get quiet and unlit quickly, so stick to where there are people. Solo walkers are generally comfortable here; use the same instincts you’d use in any small town at night.

The real risks

  • Petty theft, not violence. Don’t leave phones, cameras or bags unattended on the beach or in an open scooter basket. Lock rental cars and keep dive gear out of sight.
  • The road. Scooters cause most tourist injuries here. The ring road has fast stretches, occasional potholes and sudden rain. If you’re not confident on two wheels, rent a car instead.
  • The ocean. The east (windward) side has strong surf and rip currents — beautiful to look at, dangerous to swim. Stick to the calm west coast and swim where others do.
  • Cruise-day hustle. Downtown gets pushy sales pitches and inflated prices when ships are in. Annoying, not dangerous.

What a local would tell you

The water hurts more tourists than any person will. Respect the currents, skip the scooter if you’re unsure, and you’ll be fine.
