Where to base yourself
Almost everything on Cozumel sits on the sheltered west coast, and the whole lodging map splits into three bands along that shore: the town of San Miguel, the resort strip south of it, and a quieter cluster to the north. What you pick comes down to one question, whether you want to walk to dinner or wake up on the water, because on this island you rarely get both.
San Miguel town — best for first-timers and divers
The town center puts you steps from the dive shops, the restaurants, the ferry terminal and the malecon. It is walkable, has by far the widest range of budgets, and most dive boats pick up from the town waterfront or the nearby marina. If it is your first trip, or diving is the whole point, stay here. It is practical over scenic, the town beach is thin and functional rather than postcard, but you trade that for being able to stumble to a taco stand after a night dive. Reference points: the central plaza (the zocalo) and Avenida Rafael Melgar along the water.
- Lodging: guesthouses, dive hotels, small boutique places, a few condos.
- Rough nightly range (approximate): budget rooms around 600 to 1,000 MXN, comfortable mid-range dive hotels roughly 1,200 to 2,500 MXN.
South of town, the hotel zone — best for resort comfort and beachfront
The coast road running south toward the reefs holds the bigger beachfront hotels, dive resorts and all-inclusives, several with house reefs you can snorkel straight off a pier. Swimming is better here than in town, and you are physically closest to Palancar and Columbia. The trade-off is you need a taxi or rental car for every dinner in town. Best for couples and anyone happy to settle into one spot. Reference points: Chankanaab park and the coast road toward Punta Sur.
- Lodging: beachfront resorts, all-inclusives, dive-package hotels.
- Rough nightly range (approximate): roughly 2,500 to 6,000+ MXN, more at the all-inclusives.
North of town — best for quiet and remote
North of San Miguel is a calmer, more residential strip of condos and a few hotels, with the island’s better sand beaches and less foot traffic. It suits travelers who want space, a kitchen and a slower pace, and who do not mind driving in for meals. Reference point: the road out past the airport toward the northern hotels.
- Lodging: condo rentals, quiet resorts, some vacation homes.
- Rough nightly range (approximate): wide, roughly 1,500 to 4,000 MXN for condos.
Backpackers
Cozumel is not a backpacker island the way Tulum or Playa del Carmen are, but San Miguel town has a handful of hostels and cheap guesthouses inland from the water. Dorm beds run cheap by regional standards. If rock-bottom budget and a party scene matter more than the reef, the mainland does it better.
How to choose
For a standard three-day diving trip, town wins on low stress, because you will spend your mornings on a boat regardless and want easy nights and quick access to gear and food. Choose the south strip only if beachfront swimming and doing nothing are as important to you as the diving. See getting there and around before you commit to a base without a car, since taxis are your only ride-share here.
