Where locals go
Cozumel, Quintana Roo
Where residents actually go
Cozumeleños live a few blocks back from the waterfront, and that’s where the real island is. Walk inland from the malecon, away from the cruise strip, and prices drop while the food gets better.
Eating
The blocks around the Mercado Municipal and Avenida 30 are where locals eat — cheap loncherías, taco stands and cocinas económicas serving comida corrida at lunch. For seafood, family-run spots away from the tourist row do ceviche and whole fish for a fraction of waterfront prices.
A day off
On weekends families head to the calmer west-coast beaches south of town, or drive the ring road to the east side for beers and ceviche at the low-key beach bars. The central plaza fills in the evening — food carts, kids, marimba on some nights. Sunday evenings on the malecon are a local ritual, not a tourist show.
Groceries and everyday
The Mercado Municipal for produce and cooked food, and the neighborhood taquerías that open only at night. If a place has a handwritten menu and no one’s handing out flyers outside, you’ve found the right one.
